Swapping out a career in accountancy for haulage driving has been the fast-track route to a happier work-life balance for Maria.
Maria waved goodbye to her desk and said hello to the open road when she joined ARC as an agency driver last year.
Since then she has been “so much happier” in her career – and has called on more women to enter the industry.
She said: “I first got into driving last year. I’d previously worked as an accountant but as someone who loves driving, I thought I’d give it a go as a career.
“It’s a great job. I really enjoy it – it feels like almost every day is a great one. I feel so much happier in myself.”
Maria first started out as a tramper, mainly covering routes between the UK and the Netherlands, but said she loves her role as a day driver “just as much”.
That love for her role, tied in with the flexibility it brings, is why Maria said she wants to see more women consider careers in the traditionally male-dominated industry.
“It’s an industry I feel very comfortable in,” she said.

“I’m starting to see more and more female drivers out on the road, which is really nice to see. We’re all really supportive of each other.
“My message to other women is that if you want to try it, just do it!”
Benefits of working for ARC include 28 days paid annual leave, free access to our Health Assured scheme for drivers and their family, and free training – alongside pension contributions and other great incentives.
Maria added that working with ARC couldn’t be a simpler process – with the benefits also having a positive impact on home life.
“Working with ARC is great,” she added. “They certainly keep me busy!
“They’re always giving me lots of jobs and the flexibility is something I really enjoy.
“I’d definitely recommend working with them to anyone – I’ve even told my son he should apply!”
